Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on 4th April, 1972. Since she was the only child, she was raised also through her maternal grandparents. Scott studied at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation her school, she went to Temple University. Between two work and studying secondary education, she continued her studies. She was hoping to become a high-school English teacher. However, her dream was put on hold when after 3 years of study and being an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of college. When she began her professional career, singing at poetry events She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. They were able to collaborate and co-writing You Got Me. She was first outed as a performer at the Roots Show. Following that, she started working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. Also, she was a performer on The Canada stage of the Broadway musical production Rent. She was signed to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
